Emmanuel
The Child born to Mary was called, “Emmanuel.” “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” – Matthew 1:23 The birth of Jesus Christ was the fulfillment of a prophesy given in the Garden of Eden when God spoke to the serpent. “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.” – Genesis 3:15 Jesus is the “seed of the woman” and not the “seed of the man! He was the virgin born, Son of God. He did not have an earthly father for He was “virgin born.” “Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.” – Matthew 1:18
Mary’s birth Child was called, “Emmanuel” which means, “God with us.” God was manifested in the flesh and lived for over 33 years upon this earth before His crucifixion. He died and was bodily raised and ascended to Heaven in a glorified human body. The name, “Emmanuel” reveals the loving heart of God for lost sinners. God was “with us” for the purpose of dying for us! “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16 He was “with us” because He was “for us” and now He is “in us,” if we are saved! “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:” – Colossians 1:27
The Creator of the Universe came to die for our sins and because of His redemptive work at Calvary, He is the Creator of a work of creation far greater than the physical universe. “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” – Ephesians 2:10 He came to be more than just a message and picture on a Christmas Postcard and a figure in a Church Nativity scene. He came to be “Emmanuel” and all that precious title means.
