“Old Fashioned Unfashionableness”
The healing of the lame man created quite a stir and resulted in amazement on the part of the scribes and critics. The lame man’s healing was instantaneous and complete. He was enabled to do more than move his palsied limbs, he got up, took up his bed, and walked! The touch of the Master’s hand results in a work causing surprise and astonishment on the part of those not knowing the power of God. “And immediately he arose, took up the bed, and went forth before them all; insomuch that they were all amazed, and glorified God, saying, We never saw it on this fashion.” – Mark 2:12
Those of us who still believe that God can do beyond what we ask or think are often labelled “old fashioned” or “old school.” It is this author’s opinion that “old school,” of this type, still turns out good graduates! God works above and beyond all human capabilities for He is God! His works, from the standpoint of human comprehension, are unexplainable, unfathomable, and unfashionable. A 11-year-old child defined a miracle as “something extraordinary without any strings attached.” Human effort and accomplishment have “attachment strings” of energy, skill, and mental acuity. All these assets are limited to time and human ability. God’s miracles are perfect for they are only attached to the string of perfect Deity, which makes them incomprehensible to the minds of imperfect humans.
I would point out that the greatest miracle did not result from the words, “take up thy bed and walk” but rather, “Son, thy sins be forgiven thee”! The salvation of a soul is the greatest miracle and the greatest display of the wonder working power of God. Speaking of “unfashionable”!
