The Bluebird and The Squirrel
“O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee.” – II Chronicles 20:12
Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah were threatened by an overwhelming army of the Moabites and Ammonites who were seeking to overpower and destroy them. The threat of the overwhelming enemies threw them into a sense of utter helplessness. They reviewed their own puny assets against the enemy’s great force and concluded that they were under matched to deal with the threat. Their only recourse against the enemy force was “eyes on Jehovah”!
The only recourse that any Christian has against the overwhelming threats of life is, “eyes on Jehovah”. This upward look is a look of faith and this upward look is a strengthening look. This “upward look” can transform our weakness into strength for it puts to flight our fears. It is a “look” which can deliver, embolden, and even put to flight the threatening enemies. “Quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.” – Hebrews 11:34
The other day I watched, with amazement, a beautiful little blue bird scare a squirrel away from its territory. A squirrel climbed a telephone pole in our front yard and, apparently, had become a threat to the little blue bird. It swooped down at the squirrel and the animal came down the pole like a “red tailed hawk” was out to get it! For some reason, that gorgeous little Bluebird was perceived as a personal threat and it “turned to flight” that animal much bigger than the little bird!
The little Bluebird is among the favored of the wild bird species. Many of us have Bluebird houses and take great pleasure in nurturing their nesting habits. We are enamored by their beautiful blue color. The male Bluebirds are vivid, deep blue above and rusty or brick-red on the throat and breast. Their beauty is easily spotted even while they are in flight.
I believe that God’s people are favored, loved, and beautiful in His sight. They, too, are weak in themselves but enabled through faith and by His grace to “spread wings and fly”, putting to flight the enemies of threat.
