The Comforter has Come
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.” – John 16:7
The coming of the Comforter was more important than Jesus remaining on this earth in His physical body. His very Disciples had a problem with Him leaving them and did not want to think of him dying. His atoning and redemptive work had to be completed, involving Him physically leaving His Disciples but His leaving would mean the coming of the Holy Spirit to work in and through the people of God.
His leaving and the Holy Spirit’s coming would mean their understanding of His purpose in coming and the presence of the Holy Spirit would be more valuable to them than Jesus staying. The physical presence of Jesus on this earth before His death was that of being in one place at a time but His leaving and the appearance of the Holy Spirit meant His redemptive work being universally proclaimed and His presence realized everywhere!
The Father planned redemption, the Son purchased redemption and the Holy Spirit came to promote redemption by convicting sinners through the medium of the Word of God. The Holy Spirit could not fulfill His part in the application of the plan of salvation unless Jesus complete His work at Calvary, be resurrected, and return back to Heaven and fill His position at the Father’s right hand.
The preaching of the Gospel, enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit, was the priority of God, for the salvation of lost sinners was the reason that God drew salvations plan. The coming of the Comforter would mean that the Gospel would go forth for Jesus totally paid sins debt by His finished work.
This dark and sinful world is blessed by the light and comfort of the presence of the Comforter. The heart of sinners can be comforted with salvation in Christ. The heart of God’s people is comforted by the sweet assurance of the Comforter’s presence. The Comforter’s comfort is meted out through the meditation and appropriation of the Word of God. “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” – Romans 15:4 The Comforter also uses God’s people as comfort bearers to those in need of comfort. “Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.” – II Corinthians 1:4 Praise God, the Comforter has come!
