The Language of Tears
A baby is saved from death because it cried. The heart of a heathen woman melted because of the baby’s cry. “And when she had opened it, she saw the child: and, behold, the babe wept. And she had compassion on him, and said, This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” – Exodus 2:6 The nonverbal language of tears communicated with a common God given aspect of all humanity regardless of race or creed. We are given a glimpse into the special sensitivity of a “mother’s heart”! It is amazing to consider the little things which God uses to orchestrate His providential work. The baby, Moses, had a purpose to fulfill and its tears were used to win its favor with the daughter of the very man who was on a “baby murder spree” against Jewish male children! The providential override of God will always operate despite the efforts of evil minds.
I am reminded of another woman whose “mother’s heart” melted with sorrow as her child suffered upon a cross. This same mother had birthed and nursed her child and, no doubt, brushed away many a tear as the child was growing up. Her baby, too, was targeted by an evil mind but God had a plan which all the demons of hell could not circumvent. Jesus was a “man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.” He “wept”! Tears were a part of the tradition of His life upon this earth.
I find it very consoling to know that God understands the language of tears. A baby wept and its tears moved the heart of a heathen woman. Imagine how the heart of God is moved when His child cries! Pharoah’s daughter did not have to know what the baby was thinking when it cried, its tears were enough to move her heart to compassion. I believe that our sympathizing Saviour is not only touched by our tears but even more touched by the reasons for our tears. “For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.” – Hebrews 4:15 – Chuck Peters 12/4/2023
